Director of Frontend Development

New York, United States | Development | Full-time | Allows remote

Happy Cog is looking for a full-time Director of Frontend Development to join our team. We’re a growing interactive agency of 70+ people in Manhattan's NoMad District with great clients (like Google, Airbnb, &pizza, Dig Inn, Etsy, The Associated Press, New York City, St. Regis, Harvard, Yale, Columbia University, and WPP) and an incredible roadmap.

You’ll be a senior leader on our 35+ person development team, with a number of direct reports whose career advancement you will be directly responsible for. You will be the primary interface for all things frontend development at the agency, both for internal teams and clients. You'll be leading and advancing best practices, setting standards, reviewing code and output, and serving those who report to you. This role will test your abilities and challenge you in ways that you may not have experienced in the past.

You Will:

  • Manage a team of frontend developers who are each working on any number of client projects. They will look to you and their peers on your team for guidance on how to tackle the problems in front of them.
  • Coach, train, mentor, and grow developers at various stages of career growth.
  • Champion and educate on web accessibility topics, both as it pertains to development but also design and content production.
  • Collaborate closely with our design team leadership, leading the way on keeping designers and developers aligned in our shared goals.
  • Build frontends for client projects. This will not be your primary or sole duty, but you'll lead by example by coding on client projects.
  • Create and manage processes to help standardize Happy Cog’s approach to frontend development across the agency.
  • Contribute to thought leadership and open source projects.

You may be a great fit for this role if you:

  • Are sick of design and development teams working in silos.
  • Are sick of leadership not prioritizing web accessibility or other responsible development practices.
  • Have strong opinions on how to build a website/app - whatever that means to you.
  • Are fluent in both modern stateful JavaScript frameworks and advanced frontend visual techniques.
  • Champion browser standards, deeply understand the HTTP request cycle, and are a nerd about web performance.
  • Are empathetic to a client's budget and are eager to find creative ways to achieve a product or design vision without breaking the bank.
  • Don't need a lot of hand holding from backend developers to get projects running locally. You've worked with PHP based projects previously, aren't afraid of Docker, and know how to import a database into MySQL and run migrations.

These are deal breakers. Please only apply if you:

  • have management experience, with at least one direct report in the past
  • have agency experience, big or small
  • are open minded, approachable, fair, and empathetic
