Digital Designer

New York, United States Full-time

ABOUT US
Happy Cog is an eclectic team of designers, developers and digital marketers. We don’t do things because they’re the trendy thing to do, we do them because we believe in them. They’re the right idea, for the right client, at the right time and we believe deeply in everything we do. Happy Cog has a rich history of being at the forefront of website design and development creating such publications and events as A List Apart, An Event Apart, and A Book Apart.

We share a desire for quality and innovation across all three of our core services and the ambition to exploit each other’s strengths to create something greater than our individual abilities. We’re constantly collaborating and learning from each other.

This desire is not top down. Everyone at Happy Cog is passionate about their craft and we celebrate each other’s strengths to solve complex problems for our clients, partners, and each other.

ABOUT THE POSITION
This position will give you the opportunity to work shoulder to shoulder with world-class developers, digital marketers and of course fellow designers as we solve exciting challenges for our clients. Expect to be challenged on a daily basis to think in new ways and bring new insight to our clients and each other. You’ll be encouraged to bring your own point of view to our work and office environment.

Most importantly, we’re here to support you, we’re here to help bring you into our work environment, define where you fit into our culture, the kinds of things you’d like to work on, and the skills you’d like to add to your own knowledge base.

10 things about you, our next Digital Designer:

  • You’ve held a mid-level designer (or commensurate) position with a digital agency.
  • You’re first and foremost a designer: you never saw yourself as the design leader who didn’t design. You inspire by doing.
  • You know enough HTML and CSS to have an intelligent conversation with the developers on your team. Preferably you can crack open the web inspector on a build and communicate exactly what it is you’re looking for. (Our designers don’t have to worry about writing production-ready code, though we’d be lying if we said it wasn’t a plus.
  • You have a passion for people. We have a long history of advocacy for the open web. This has been our philosophy since our beginnings sixteen years ago, from our role in the web standards movement to the rise of responsive web design.
  • You have a passion for your craft. We believe that affection and understanding of design history sets the stage for future innovation. Bringing a level of design sophistication to the online world is very important to us. It also means standing up for the value of design and always making sure it’s part of the discussion and value that we bring to our clients. Being able to speak about design and show clients the value of what we do is crucial.
  • You have an insatiable curiosity. You research everything. You think the greatest thing about being a designer is all the knowledge you get to pick up along the way: about new industries and their challenges, their history; things you’d never think to look up on your own that you’ll be an expert in by the time the project’s over.
  • You have some experience conducting small, qualitative usability testing sessions. (If you don’t, we’re willing to train the right person.)
  • You can facilitate a design workshop. We don’t do kickoffs where people nod off around a conference table. We get up and out of our seats. It would be your job to construct and lead these meetings. It goes without saying you’re a convincing presenter.
  • You're empathetic. Understanding our clients and each other goes beyond a quick googling. We believe that to truly understand our clients’ problems we must stand in their shoes, so we go deep into client workshops, research and even field trips to understand related experiences. Internal leadership qualities are also very important as you work with a variety of designers and developers to bring your work to life.
  • You’re different. Tell us how.
